This factsheet summarizes up-to-date information on HPV, cervical dysplasia and cervical cancer. Cervical dysplasia is an abnormal change in the cells of the cervix in the uterus. Early changes, called low-grade lesions by doctors, may persist and develop into high-grade lesions that can lead to cervical cancer. A sexually transmitted virus called HPV (human papillomavirus) causes most cervical dysplasia and all cervical cancers.
